I have a vague recollection that I adjusted my about:config settings for that once. I find a few config settings with "middle" in their name. All of them are set to true, in particular middlemouse.contentLoadURL which sounds the most relevant. Contrasting with my idea that I changed a setting for this, the values all seem to be the default value.
