I've made it worse by requiring gsed, it's not necessary for x86 but my
cryptic failures on mips/arm were helped by that.

(That is also why it is ifdef NetBSD, it caused more trouble for people
relying exclusively on pkgsrc GCC)

We can test for the existence of a package, too. That might be the way
to go.
