I just meant to add that I don't have /var/db/pkg either:
$ ll /var/db/
total 8
drwxr-xr-x 2 dbus dbus 4096 Dec 7 18:37 dbus/
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Jan 4 18:51 pkgin/
and I have installed tons of programs.
