With some programs that are mouse-aware in xterms you can shift-mouse for select and paste. I haven't checked, but it may be that the +clipboard build option determines if you can use the "* and/or "+ buffers. You can check if doing a "*p will paste the X selection, and if "+p will paste the clipboard.
