Thanks Wiz but in the meantime, I botched my disklabel (see netbsd-users@). I remember adding more ram in the qemu VM up to 1GB but it still gave me the same error. I wanted to add more swap and that's when I killed disklabel.

I guess you ran into some VM limits (not enough RAM). Try with a
larger VM or with MAKE_JOBS=1 or both.
