It looks maintained. I have lost track of gnome2 vs gnome3 vs mate vs
gnome 44, sorry. (I use to run gnome but switched to xfce. Ah for the
days of uwm and X10!).

I don't know what's up, but my top-level point is that you can create a package in wip. That's then useful for you, and it makes it easier for
people with commit access to review, help, and perhaps hoist it to
pkgsrc.

It still builds without any problem.

The reason for deletion in pkgsrc was given by Nia Alarie as:

Log message:
gdm: remove

GNOME 2 version, unlikely to work with modern GNOME.

x11/slim is a good replacement.

PR pkg/56294

If it is maintained, it would be great to include it into pkgsrc again.
Otherwise i have to make up my mind of adding it to wip.

As nia@ noted, slim is another option, and one that was intended to be
used with MATE, Xfce, and such. And there are other possibilities.

At one time there was a bounty to add the GNOME 3 version of GDM:

It was never fulfilled by anyone, I believe due to the complexity
involved. cirnatdan@ may be able to comment further here.
