Solarish build picking up an incorrect value for $mandir, and running with that, causing a PLIST issue.

The mandir is actually correct, but for some reason the automatic plist handling isn't working in that package.  mk/plist/plist-man.awk should be translating ^man entries into ^share/man, as it does in all other packages (line 136-138).

You mean, pkgsrc on smartos (not Solarish, my OmniOS machine has PREFIX/man) uses a non-standard PKGMANDIR?

Or when did PREFIX/share/man become a thing? It surely isn't on my Arch / FreeBSD / OmniOS pkgsrc installations.

That build uses PKGMANDIR=share/man, yes, in particular so that packages with such issues are exposed and can be fixed.

PKGMANDIR has been a thing we've supported since at least 2005, originally to help with systems that used pkgsrc as the primary package manager and bootstrapped to /usr.
