I independently gathered basically the same data this morning.

I found that invoking ck-launch-session explicitly in Xsession is
probably only necessary for LXDE, which was the first DE I got working
with desktop-installer.  It actually causes problems with XFCE and Mate.

Reducing Xsession to "exec $session_command" leads to basically
functional XFCE and Mate sessions, though LXQT still has the dbus
problems, with or without an explicit ck-launch-session.  Perhaps it's
running ck-launch-session under the hood?

XFCE works pretty well, but I cannot escape from a locked screen and
have to terminate the session from another shell.

Mate works well overall, but does not show reboot, shutdown, etc.
buttons on exit.  Not a major problem, since desktop-installer provides
them on the XDM screen.

I just committed a fix to desktop-installer so that it does not use
ck-launch-session explicitly in Xsession.  I suspect this will disable
reboot/shutdown buttons on the LXDE exit screen.  I'll add tweaks for
individual DEs as needed going forward.

Once the new binary package is available, desktop-installer should be
working pretty well following the simplified instructions at

Now I think we can start focusing on various improvements to the desktop
packages, fusefs, battery monitoring, etc.
