Well seems I found a workaround for this.  I’m not a curses expert (not even a novice) but:

-curses_pads
		toggles the use of curses "pad" feature which supports left/right scrolling of the display.

Seems to fix this right up.  This lets me keep $TERM as default xterm, and color works.
