Gnu M4 test fails at 198.sysval

I am trying to build links-gui on NetBSD/macppc. When make reaches /usr/bin/make check-recursive, the M4 test 198.sysval fails, and make is killed. Excerpt:

Checking ./198.sysval
@ ../doc/m4.texi:6751: Origin of test
./198.sysval: stderr mismatch
--- m4-tmp.9514/m4-xerr 2024-07-16 16:41:00.536953955 -0400
+++ m4-tmp.9514/m4-err  2024-07-16 16:41:00.507606342 -0400
@@ -0,0 +1 @@
+[1]   Killed                  /bin/sh -c "kill -9 \$\$"

There exists a manual patch for m4-1.4.19, which I have tried to apply myself, but the pkgsrc version already seems to have a similar patch applied during make. Is there a workaround for this? Should I attach/paste the full make output here?
Thanks.
