Thanks for advice.

I tried different toolchain (well it's from the same tree but 
more recent) on a very similar machine. No problems, no crashes, same
kernel builds, boots and runs. It also has only one program header
but no problems with that as well. I'm going to bring that
toolchain to the problem machine and try again. I just realized
that I can check kernels criss-cross, but I can do it only
next week.
