I suspect that your drive start negotiating sync/wide mode
first and this is not supported by esp driver. If you can
set ncr53c9x_debug to 0x3ff during boot and send a log it
should show if this is a case. To do that you need to boot with -d
flag 

boot netbsd -d

Kernel will drop to ddb very early so you'll need to

write ncr53c9x_debug 0x3ff
c

The log is supposed to be large so you'll better off with serial console
which let you grab it.
