Hello,
Can somebody please tell me what are the limitations of built-in IDE controller in Ulta 5 class machines ? I checked the supported hardware list but found no mention of either HD size or transfer mode limitation. I can't find any useful information on Sun's website eitherm presumeably because they'd love to sell me a HD at twice the actual price with Sun label slapped on it.
What is the biggest drive size supported by hardware (so NetBSD can boot off of it) ? Are there any restrictions regarding the lcoation of bootloader/kernel (scuh as the ancient 1024 cylinder problem on PeeCee), in other words, the size and location of root parititon ? Which transfer modes are supported ? What CDs are supported (2048 vs. 512 byte sector ?) for booting ? I should be getting an Ultra 5 in a couple of weeks and since it is without HD and its CD is defective i was planning to purchase new 40 GB ATA HD (or larger if i get a good price) and some cheap CD (it seems 52x is all they have for sale now anyway and they are dirt cheap).Alternatively, i could swap my old CD-RW from one of my PeeCees if that thing works on Sparc64 HW at all (endian byte order difference ? support of ATAPI commands other than basic identify and read ?). Would anybody care to enlighten me ? :-)
Thanks in advance for your help !!!
