I think it is related :-) I followed your advice and rebuilt kernel with
the following lines commented out
## Sun FFB
#ffb* at mainbus0
#wsdisplay* at ffb?
# On board vga on U5/U10 etc.
#machfb* at pci?
#wsdisplay* at machfb?
So the console and keyboard work now, and if I log in via ssh and run
'vmstat 1' and then press CTRL-C it does kill the application
I've noticed another thing with current kernel/userland:
/usr/bin/file does not seem to understand some fields of an ELF binary
$ file /bin/cp
/bin/cp: data, for NetBSD 2.99.16, dynamically linked (uses shared
libs), not stripped
