They're different filesystems, so you can have both - no more wasted
space because it's in the wrong partition ( well, at least it's greatly
reduced ) but you can still keep things tidy and separate. But the main
benefit of a lvm is that if you really run out of space you can just
throw another disk into a volume and extend filesystems again without
having to stop anything.
( yeah, that's more useful for big servers and probably irrelevant for
most desktops but you get used to it... )
