That's exactly what it's supposed to do. The firmware will redirect the con=
sole to a serial port if it finds no keyboard.

You don't need to compile your own userland to run X and get USB support ( =
it takes about 7h on my U10, that's a 333MHz US IIi with 2MB cache ) - I co=
mpiled one a few days ago, if you want I'll make them available for downloa=
d - certainly beats waiting for the compiler I guess :)
