Meanwhile I tried with a U1. Much to my surprise it seemed to work. So I
mounted the disk from the U1 in th U5 and it still works. But rewriting
the disklabel(5) clobers the boot blocks. Strange.=20

Is your 4 GB disk 8 bit or 16 bit SCSI? I noticed that the disk from the
U1 was jumpered to 8 bit / narrow SCSI.
