Which gtk2 versions are you using? is it by any chance 2.8.something on
one box and 2.6 or older on the other? The kernel shouldn't have much
influence on graphics performance ( I guess you're using some sort of
Creator? )
GTK 2.8 switched to a completely different rendering subsystem which
really needs Xrender to perform halfway acceptable.=20
So, if you're using a Creator and didn't update X for a few months
please do so - I committed a driver ( and a load of bugfixes ) that
supports Xrender and hardware-accelerated alpha-blending, performance is
MUCH better with that. It's still fairly new though, and not really
ready for a stable release.
