I haven't found any problems booting with old PROM versions on the
ultra 5/10. I upgraded mine because of some intermittent ecache (L2
cache?) panic that I don't know if the PROM helped or not, but there
was some changelog about memory timings, and in at least 178 days no
more ecache panic. If you'd like to try a new one, here it is:

 ftp://castrovalva.ivy.net/pub/carton/openboot-106121-18.zip

It is available on Sun's site, without a support contract, but it's
easier for me to post than to find again. I used rarp and tftp with
'boot net' to install it. I think Sun has put some older versions in
there for you too.

(i dunno about ecache, but believe it or not with 1GB of RAM solaris
logs one or two corrected ECC errors a month, not at the same address.
I was surprised the infrastructure could matter that much for normal
users:

I mean, what, maybe my RAM is ``marginal'', but I haven't been pissing
on it or anything---I'm a normal user with normal ram, and my box is
still up. stupid ECC-less PeeCees.
