Sounds like you ran into the Bad Old IRQ Mapping Bug. Sun apparently 
changed the way IRQ lines are encoded by OpenFirmware at some point so 
we get bogus on newer machines. Since you have the hardware - could you 
have a look and check what exactly OpenBSD does different? My machines 
are all old enough to Just Work.
