   I use a "Franken 5". (U5 build from a bare U5 board set and various
   PeeCee parts.) It uses a generic ATX PSU. The extra connector on the
   main board is not connected. It is working this way for years now.

interesting.  i tried some random (new antec, not crap) ATX PSU's
but it didn't help, but an older ATX 1.3 PSU did...
