Yeah, people who remap keycodes in X can also put some sysctl -w whatever into .xinitrc ;)

Well, checking if the console is in WSDISPLAYIO_MODE_MAPPED is probably a sufficient indication. I don't like it though.

        I'll try not to mention the various volume keys I've seen on
        generic USB keyboards :)

Supporting them ( or at least some of them ) shouldn't be hard - the scancodes are standardized after all. For instance - if you plug a Sun Type 6 USB into a Mac the volume control keys Just Work(tm) in MacOS X.
