5.0_BETA: ultra 5 cannot find root device?
I tried a 5.0_BETA kernel on an U5 that has been running 4.0_STABLE
for a long time without problems, but it seems to have problems
finding the right root device. With the 4.0 kernel it normally says:
root on wd0a dumps on wd0b
root file system type: ffs
but with 5.0_BETA I get this instead:
cd0(cmdide0:1:0): Check Condition on CDB: 0x00 00 00 00 00 00
SENSE KEY: Not Ready
ASC/ASCQ: Medium Not Present
root on cd0a dumps on cd0b
cd0(cmdide0:1:0): Check Condition on CDB: 0x00 00 00 00 00 00
SENSE KEY: Not Ready
ASC/ASCQ: Medium Not Present
vfs_mountroot: can't open root device
cannot mount root, error = 19
root device (default cd0a): wd0a
dump device (default wd0b):
file system (default generic):
root on wd0a dumps on wd0b
root file system type: ffs
If I manually enter "wd0a" it will go on and seems to work fine once
booted. Updating /ofwboot did not make any difference.
Full dmesg for 4.0 and 5.0 are included below, but here are some
differences:
4.0 have these to that are not in 5.0 at all:
pci0: i/o space, memory space enabled
pci1: i/o space, memory space enabled
cmdide0: bus-master DMA support present
The disk is also different, 4.0 says:
wd0 at atabus0 drive 0: <ST39111A>
wd0: drive supports 16-sector PIO transfers, LBA addressing
wd0: 8693 MB, 17662 cyl, 16 head, 63 sec, 512 bytes/sect x 17803297 sectors
wd0: drive supports PIO mode 4, DMA mode 2, Ultra-DMA mode 4 (Ultra/66)
wd0(cmdide0:0:0): using PIO mode 4, DMA mode 2 (using DMA)
5.0 only says:
wd0 at atabus0 drive 0: <ST39111A>
wd0: 8693 MB, 17662 cyl, 16 head, 63 sec, 512 bytes/sect x 17803297 sectors
Does this ring any bells to someone?
Best regards,
-- Urban
