If you use the whole of the disk as one partition, you should use
partition c. I don't know if this is the cause of your problems, though...
Did you 'newfs' the partitions using the raw device? (/dev/rra0a etc.)

Yep. RZ23 is ~104MB and RZ23L is ~125MB.
