nfs share locks up on netbsd hvm instance

I have an nfs server running on a pvm. It works fine with nfs clients
on other pvms. What I'm doinging is sharing pkgsrc from the nfsserver.
I can write to the share from the hvm (tried a touch), and I can read
files. But when I try *any* make commands, it locks up. Could someone
offer a way to troubleshoot.
