having trouble booting an i386 domU kernel.

what I try
lucius# xm create -c /etc/xen/domU1  
Using config file "/etc/xen/domU1"
lucius# Error: Device 0 (vif) could not be connected. Hotplug scripts not working.

what /var/log/messages says
Aug 23 14:32:07 lucius xenbackendd[278]: Failed to read /local/domain/0/backend/console/4/0/script (No such file or directory)


do you want xend.log? It was rather verbose.

Any hints on what to do next/what might be wrong would be appreciated
