I believe a block device is expected, hence the problems you're seeing.  
I'm using LVM with Xen just fine:

disk = [ 'phy:/dev/mapper/vg0-peerroot,hda,w',
        'phy:/dev/mapper/vg0-peerswap,hdb,w',
]
