The way I use it is to dd it to an LVM volume 
(/dev/mapper/mirror-buildtest in this case).  Here's the xm/xl config:

name = "buildtest"
vcpus = 4
memory = 512

bootloader = "/usr/pkg/bin/pygrub"

vif = ['mac=00:16:3e:ff:5e:ae, bridge=bridge0' ]
disk = [ 'phy:/dev/mapper/mirror-buildtest,0x1,w' ]
