After reformatting the root as FFSv1 (level 4) with 8 kB block it works.
I do not know which change is decisive, but I suspect it is the first
one.

I suspect it is not even necessary to really install grub in the domU,
but that only /grub/menu.lst is necessary. I will try that out.
