It depends on the hypervisor.
I think an amd64 hypervisor with a i386PAE dom0 should work (at last
in theory) but I think I never tried it. Then it should be able to
run amd64 domUs.
an i386PAE hypervisor can only run i386PAR dom0 or domUs
