I don't understand why it boots to the default kernel either.

I use David Brownlee's method[1] to set up raidframe on GPT. I always
allow parity to complete, if that's what you mean.

In principle, raid+wedges+GPT shouldn't cause a problem for Xen, I take
it? The dom0 kernel has the necessary options included?

Unfortunately I can no longer test this machine because I've moved to a
different provider, and my new machine won't be available till tomorrow.

I should have added that this was with NetBSD-7 (around August 2016) and
Xen from pkgsrc-2016q2.
