Perhaps my load and your load are quite different?
A GNU autoconf + libtool based build might not exercise the compiler as
much as one might assume, but instead spend lots of cycles in /bin/sh
through first the configure script and later through countless
invocations of the libtool script.
And shells tend to make many system calls, some needed and some less so.
