I have Xen 4.13 with HVM domUs, I didn't notice this problem

4.13 may want a sighly different syntax, I use:
file:/domains/cassiopee.vnd,ioemu:hda,w

Another linux domU uses:
file:/domains/netmonitor.vnd,xvda,w
