The problem disapeared after migrating the domU  to amd64.

In the meantime, I moved the VM to a hardware machine, but
I found another Xen domlU that exhibited a similar behabvor, 
and it was fixed by upgrading to amd64 while remaining a
Xen domU.

I suspect there is a bug in IPfilter, since ipfs -W was
a 100% reliable was to froze the i386 domU. Even on amd64
hardware machine, ipfs -W breaks the network and trigger
a watchdog reset.
