hm. i see:

     The inclusion of <curses.h> may make visible all symbols from the headers
     <stdio.h>, <term.h>, <termios.h> and <wchar.h>.


which indicates that <string.h> _isn't_ ok.


but neither is <curses.h> being broken without <string.h> before it!


perhaps <curses.h> needs a local copy of strlen() proto?  ick.
