Only on a multi-floppy set or from a rescue floppy then (using x86 as an
example). I'll also guess that it was because you decided to install by hand
in some way way then as apposed to using sysinst. While these are nice, they
certainly aren't requirements for installing (the -small and -tiny floppies
on x86 don't have ed and I use -small to install from often when testing).

Or create rescue floppies. The install floppy itself has no need for ed in
order for sysinst to do it's job and create a system. I'll look some more, but
this floppy is pretty full as-is.
