  Hmm, yes I think you are right. I will run some tests.

pppd has been broken for a while for me, but I haven't figured it out
well enough to file a bug or fix it.  Basically, when the modem hangs
up, due to telco or other end, pppd deletes the struct ifnet, but
doesn't either exit (!persist) or redial (persist).  I'm running
3.99.9 on the ppp box, and will be upgrading to more recent current.
