My biggest concern, btw, is this. People expect to reboot their
machine and have it come up in a totally fresh state. Anything that
impacts the configuration in a real way they expect to be something
they changed in /etc.

I don't like the idea that you might run a couple of utilities and
have a file in a place that the average person won't search for alter
the way the machine will behave after reboot. Maybe you screw
something up, you hope that a reboot will fix it, and it never
does. You might tear your hear clear out of your head before figuring
it out...
