I converted i386. It wasn't entirely straight-forward, but its done.
If someone could make the same changes for amd64, that would be great.
I can't even compile test this owing to the fact that somebody busted
cross compilation on Solaris. :-(
The amd64 changes should be mostly the same as the i386.
