Should this be accompanied by the removal of COMPAT_BSDPTY from the
GENERIC kernels? And the INSTALL ones?

For the INSTALL kernels, it might be OK. But for the generic kernel, I
don't think it. I bet a number of programs still want to do it manually.

Such as?

I've been running NetBSD systems with ptyfs enabled for years (soon after it was introduced, IIRC) and without COMPAT_BSDPTY... and have not found any problems so far.
