Don't try so hard to convert strings into numbers. Results in bogus
conversions like:

% awk 'BEGIN { print "nanotime" + 123 }'
nan
% awk 'BEGIN { print "microtime" + 123 }'
123
% awk 'BEGIN { print "inftime" + 123 }'
inf
