Actually, the idea is to not define that in the compiler's predefines.
The more arcane things like Xservers can be conditional on inclusion of
<sys/param.h> and the MACHINE define. The idea is to not differentiate
anything that doesn't need to be differentiated. The compiler fits in
this category.
In the case of the X server, this can be submitted to the X Consortium as
a patch (to the imake stuff) if it's not already in there.
