So, i can understand hacking ftp, because there's no reasonable
alternative that fits within the parameters that would make it
acceptable for inclusion in the master source tree.

However, is that true for wu-ftpd, as well?  If we can, why don't we
just ship that?  (If you want to add mods to it, great, integrate it,
and send the mods back to its maintainers.)

I seem to recall that BSD/OS ships with wu-ftpd, but i don't know what
license wu-ftp is distributed under.
