I would suspect some kind of hardware probleme here. Are you sure the cable you
got with the drive is correct (wdc1(0) points to your new drive) ? Could
you try another one ?
Also make sure the controller is on one end of the cable, and the drive on
the other end (not in the middle).

It would use the Ultra-DMA feature of your hardware (which 1.3.3 doesn't).
The performance boost may be worth it. But I would solve the current problem
first ...
