I would advise looking at SFIO (pkgsrc/devel/sfio).
It is, as I understand it, designed to allow for wedges like this to be
implemented, and it has STDIO-compatible front-end. This combination
should allow one to transparently insert something like an SSL transport
between a STDIO-using application and the low-level OS system calls.
