On HP-UX 11.00, there are three files kept in /etc which appear to
be a global repository for PATH information:

/etc/PATH
/etc/MANPATH
/etc/SHLIB_PATH

The idea is that when an application/package installs itself, it can
update the relevant file to add its own component.  I imagine this is
more important when you're supporting a /opt "subsystem", than perhaps
/usr/pkg.  Still, is this an idea which is worth including in NetBSD
somewhere further down the track ?  At least if X11 ever becomes a
package, its installation and integration into the "environment" would
appear to be more managable, etc.
