vipw, as far as I can tell, currently doesn't take any options and
further doesn't even attempt to provide any of the functionality you
describe, or anything related to it.

It's just _not_ the right place to put this, even if this is in fact a
generally useful behaviour.  (I think you've had several people
question even that, including myself.)
