i think you mean "grep ^.PATH Makefile" and that only works in the
place that's reaching over...not the place that being reached into.

of course, you can always do this:

   # cd /usr/src
   # find . -name Makefile | xargs grep ^.PATH | grep cksum

to find places that reach over into cksum.  kinda suboptimal.  i was
suggesting that cksum would have a file called REACHOVER that would
detail which places were borrowing files.  i guess you could call it
duplication of information, but it's the other way up and more useful.
