There is already a pretty good tool for this type of thing which
you may not have known about, mmv(1).  It will let you do all
kinds of other neat things too.  It however doesn't appear to be
in pkgsrc for NetBSD (although it is for FreeBSD and OpenBSD),
and I'm not really sure where upstream is.  You might try just
grabbing the orig tarball from Debian if you want to take a look. :/
