Is the world ready for text-based utmp?
That makes far too much sense!

It's obvious from this discussion that you can't please everyone.

I've been through several utmp format changes from one vendor or
other. In each case, the deal was, use new tools on version x because
the old ones will blow up. So we did.

I could go with a cruft-free upgrade that adds the much needed
functionality now, and devil take the old stuff. Fewer bugs, less code
to maintain.
